Like with Roope Hintz, Johnston saw some similar team effects: his defense suffered for a lot of reasons, but to be fair, Johnston has a better explanation — more minutes versus elite competition compared the previous seasons. All in all, he had a great year not just in terms of setting a career high in points, but in maintaining elite impacts on Dallas’ ability to generate shots, and shot quality. He was also very good on special teams, which makes his development that much more encouraging.
Yes, averaging his previous three seasons takes him down a notch in certain areas.
But we’re still talking about an elite player here — an elite player who is still just 22 years old.
