GM and staff have to take a good hard look at that Pavelski getting 4th most minutes stat. With the way he played in last portion of regular season and playoffs that is practically coaching malpractice. They doubled down in the Stanley Cup Playoffs on a poor performer because they admire him? Yikes
In the end it comes down to what happened to the team that got us here? Old ? Tired? Loss of hocus? Ultimately it was the defense.
No disrespect to MR. Bourque, but to play him in this game at this level? That’s as much an admission to giving up as I have seen.
Must have motivated the Pilers even more. And had opposite effect on our Scars
What happened to pavelski? The man made a living in the crease!! Not to be seen. Instead missed open nets facing the goalie?? I wonder if he played hurt? How many others played hurt??
The same old line still holds today. Your counterpart said it
Defense wins championships…
Special teams was an embarrassment
Looking forward to our youth taking over next year.. and hopefully a whole new defensive strategy.
Thanks for the articles! Gotta give Edmonton credit, they did enough to get to the buzzer.
Our injuries Hintz, Seguin, Tanev, and our inability to check a man ((Miro) instead letting McDavid walk a dainty walk across the crease… or Hyman previously many times… the PP weakness doomed the Stars this year.
Imo… we’ll get another run next year.
Pavs-Suter, thanks, bye. Buy buy out Suter.
Resign Tanev to mentor Bichell.
I’d resign Duchene, it’s not his fault he was played with fence posts on his wings.
I’d find a new home for Marchment… get a bag of pucks, use his $ elsewhere, addition by subtraction. Same for Faska, Not fast enough, lost weight, now not big enough.
This loss will sting for a bit. 0/14 on the power play is unacceptable, but so is being 4-6 at home in the playoffs. I understand it takes time to win a cup. It took The Red Wings years to break through. Vegas went 5 years between finals appearances. The Avalanche kept getting their hearts broken in the 2nd round. I don't know what the future holds I know the future is bright, but it's hard as hell just to make the conference finals. There are no guarantees in sport but I would hate to be typing this exact same thing 5 years from now without this group ever winning a cup.
I think you will see how to play McDavid in the upcoming series. You can’t try to stop him with your stick when he is in close, no you have to hit him. Put a body on him just like Edmonton did our guys when they got in close. I am not sure what was wrong with the Stars in this series but the team that won the first two rounds was better than the team that showed up against the Oilers. If you put the Oilers in either series instead of Vegas or Colorado Dallas would have won. I do know that the Stars have to find some other D men to be able to get Miro off the ice or he won’t last more than a couple of more years. I do hope Tanev and Duchene both come back and I don’t think either could find a better place to play. Already looking forward to 24-25.
I don't know that I agree Edmonton was the better team, but I don't feel like Dallas deserved to win this series either. I know the possession metrics aren't pretty, but outside of games 4 and 5, I think Dallas played the Oilers closer than the possession numbers indicate. They largely contained Draisaitl To me, the series ultimately came down to special teams and posts.
They generated just 5.7 xG/60 on the power play, that's not nearly good enough. Credit to the Oiler's PK, but Dallas was slow to adjust their personnel too. Pavelski and Hintz had just 1 shot attempt between them in 21 minutes of PP time combined. The top unit just isn't a threat if only 3 players on the ice are taking shots. It inexcusable that they kept trotting out the (basically) same top unit all series long.
Of course the series looks very different if one of Robertson's posts in game 1 bounces the other way. So does game 6 if Seguin or Hintz's posts go in. I'll have to check this, but I'm pretty sure Dallas had more posts in a series with four one goal games (excluding empty netters).
This was also one of the weirdest playoff runs on the PK I can remember. Absolute feast or famine game-to-game. They allowed 2 goals 5 times, and went 0% in 4 games (with two other games where they killed a single garbage time penalty). They were real bad against Edmonton though, even before the sprung a leak in games 5 and 6.
Anyway, they didn't get the lucky bounces, but they also didn't create their own luck. The series was there for the taking and they had too many instances of looking to pass instead of just taking the shot on a mediocre goalie.
Well, I was wrong! Posts were actually 6-5 in favor of Edmonton, but it doesn't look like Seguin's post at the beginning of game 6 was counted. Either way, not nearly as lopsided as I remembered it.
Like Natalie Imbruglia, I'm torn. Dallas looked extremely unlucky last night (I think the TNT broadcast said the oilers tied for fewest shots in a series clincher?!), but how does a team with this talent go 0-whole series on the pp?
Dallas couldn't seem to complete any E-W passes through the slot. Was the Edmonton D the best version of what the Dallas D wanted to do? Was Lundqvist such a liability? I don't really want to dig into the Nils situation because i had finally come to terms with the Julius situation. Looking forward to Bichsel...? I really wanted this one for Pavs. I'd be happy to see him back next season, but hopefully with more appropriate deployment. Overall, i was really happy with this season, and i think there's plenty to be excited about for 24-25.
I hope you're right about Tanev coming back and Suter retiring. It would go a long way to making the money work. I look forward to reading your FA target thoughts while I mournfully root for the Panthers.
Suter won't retire (would you give away guaranteed money if you thought you could still contribute); if they don't buy him out, he will play in the third pair and be used appropriately. If we had a proper third pairing for the entirety of the playoffs, he may not have been gassed against the Oilers.

Great summary of a good PO run., but not a great PO run...Just like our GM.
