You said what we're all thinking. Wouldn't we rather have a 7th for Faksa than a 4th for Delly?

Even a bag of pucks to take Faska and salary!!!

Pay entire 4th line with his $$$!!!

Yeah man. Smith Delly and Steel would have been fine. A 4th is a good return but I'm not sure it's quite an absolute steal. There are plenty of 1st rounders that aren't sure fire NHLers. I kinda see Delly as another Dickinson or like Dave said similar to Janmark.

Well Janmark is playing in the Stanley Cup and doing very good. In fact he beat Dallas with a shorthand goal in the playoffs.

Agreed, loved his effort, but results were too rare, and penalties too many. He should be on the concussion protocol long term follow up list for all the tough head shots he took!!!

Good luck Delly!

The man wins GM of the Year two years running…and he still can’t catch a break from some fans.

Also, my actual reply to this is that a) fans will always be hypercritical as is their right and b) GM of the Year does not mean perfect decision-maker of the year.

I think that's the problem most people have with this deal. This was Nill's first round pick, got two and a half seasons out of him, and now he's moving on for the price of a fourth rounder. That's just bad value all around, over a player who probably would have been fine on the fourth line.

Maybe Dellandrea washes out and this ends up looking brilliant, but Nill's the one that brought him into this hockey world. It's on him, whether Dellandrea was good enough or not.

GM of the year is not "The Stanley Cup". He'll get a "break" when he puts that team together. How else do you measure ultimate success in hockey?

I mean, their season is done. No one is criticizing the man for the last two seasons his team has put together, but to label his tenure a complete success requires a Cup winning season, and this roster isn't a Cup winning roster. They're a Western Conference and Divisional champion for the regular season, and a WC finalist team.

I still am not sure if we know what injuries the players were dealing with in the playoffs.

Nill has a ton of work to do to get this team above Edmonton and keep above Colorado this next season.

I said this numerous time, Jim Nill is a very good GM. But until he wins a Cup he will never be a great GM.

For example, if he would have used Dellandrea (and Lundkvist) as part of a trade to get another third pair D like Walker, we would be playing hockey as we speak. That's what great GM do. They go the distance and take risks. IMO, Jim Nill is lacking this boldness.

In my book, Zito should have been named the GM of the year.

I agree... Tanev was a necessary add for this team to get to where they ended up. Without that move, Vegas would have had their number in the first round.

However, I feel like Nill has been hesitant to pull the trigger on the deadline move that really puts them over the top. There were players to be had out there for draft picks. At this point, I still feel like Bourque is a tradeable piece, that should absolutely be used in a deal that makes sense.

Personally, I'd take a shot at trading for Laine with enough salary retained by Columbus. Maybe even up to 50-60% due to his injury history and it being their mistake to sign him to a contract worth so much. Laine at $3-4 mil per season could be a steal for 2 years. The Stars are in their championship window right now. They aren't far off. Got to make the moves to make it work...

They could very well accomplish the same thing without a big forward move, but it sure seemed like scoring was at an extra premium for the Stars come playoff time.

A couple of quality Defensive adds in lieu of a forward also could be the difference.

Colorado got Walker and sent a conditonnal 1st round pick and a Cap dump in return. Colorado even got a 5th round pick in that deal.

I have trouble believing that we could not get Walker (with retention) for Dellandrea + Lundkvist.

I like the trade only as in we freed up cap space that we didn't need to be spending. Now if we could just offload Faksa and buyout Suter... Then maybe we can make some impactful secondary moves.

I mean, there's not much h out there that really could be that wow factor of a major move out there on the FA market, short of convincing Stamkos or Marchessault to take a little less for a chance to win. Or signing Tanev, Duchene, and snagging a second defensive guy (DeMelo/Pesce would be ideal)...

I am very concerned about this roster come next year.

No Pavelski... Benn older, Seguin older, Suter practically dead, Pavelski retired, Tanev older (if he re-signs), Robertson trying to transition into a playmaker instead of a sniper, Hintz worrying more about the calls he doesn't get than putting the puck in the net...

For me the only bright spots are Johnston, Stank, Miro, and Harley. Everything else is just kind of... "Alright let's do this again"...

I'm just not sure this team, without any major additions, is able to achieve more next year than this one.

I'm not worried about the forwards. In fact, I feel like this will be another year where Dallas brings in a FA because there's no way they can put Mavrik Bourque in the top six and he plays his way in the top six anyway. To me it's all about the blueline and they can upgrade it.

Expand full comment

Blue line can definitely be upgraded this offseason... Give me DeMelo and Tanev, and I'm good. Best case for me would be a Suter buyout, and let Nils start getting some heavily protected O-zone starts and PP time...

Maybe you can convince a guy like Stamkos to come play with Johnston/Stankoven and be a new influence on Johnston/Robertson... Doubt it, but it's a great thought...

The concern about potentially running it back is valid, and I’m generally a pessimist about how the Stars operate. That said, I think it’s early to be super down about next season. Let’s see what Nill does. If he likes where the team is at, then yeah, be concerned.

I'm not so much down on Dallas as I am concerned about the improvements in teams around the league. The Stars have played a ton of hockey and have a large veteran group at the top of the roster.

I honestly think they were 1 player away from being in the finals this year in addition to Tanev.

DuClair was available. Toffoli was available. Konecny might have been able to be pried away from Philly.

The Eastern Conference had some quality trade partners to work with and teams were willing to keep salary on the books at the trade deadline in order to collect assets for the future.

I love what Nill has been able to do, but, the only real gamble he's made with picks was for Nils Lundkvist, who has barely seen the ice, and he gave up a 1st rounder... I'm confused by his tactics and how he evaluated draft picks over instant upgrades...

The Upon Further Review section is where I am. This team had no need to sign both RFA left wingers and they needed to unload some salary from that 4+ man 4th line. Dellandrea was the odd man out. Now I wouldn't have hated even buying out Faksa (would save $1.8M this season), but that doesn't seem Nill's style. The problem with Dellandrea, despite the parts of his game I like, was the kid can't score to save his life. It was a running joke with me and my son this season every time the puck was on his stick. He had a worse shooting percentage than Esa Lindell and just barely edged out Jank Hakanpaa. San Jose will hopefully give him the opportunity to flourish. He may very well become the next Janmark. He wasn't going to really help this team "win now" in any meaningful way. Wish him the best.

The only real impact this trade has is an emotional one. Delly is very much liked and a good friends with many Stars players.

Maybe this was a way for Nill to "shake up" the team? Definitely not a Nill "type" of move. Just the opposite.

SJ wins this trade, they get a 1000% return on a 4th round pick instantly.

For Dallas, you have to look around the edges of this one.

1) Nill was willing to let go of a 1st rounder he picked

2) Dellandrea wasn't let go for nothing

3) Steel > or = Dellandrea and Nill got him for free

4) $1M vet 4th liners are out there, Nill signaled that he's willing to go shopping (looking at you Smitty)

5) We didn't like where we were at

6) Ty didn't seem to mesh with PDB and was the odd man out frequently, hopefully the next guy isn't just the temporary spare like Dellandrea kind of became

I felt like this was always the plan for Delly when he signed a very team friendly/move friendly contract last season. I was more surprised he wasn't moved around the TDL last season.
