My theory is that Stanky has an arm/hand/shoulder injury that’s effected his shot strength, speed, and accuracy… but his wheels are unbeatable!

I'm not too fond of this kind of speculation. This isn't necessarily aimed at you, or even Stankoven's case specifically. But how many years did we go through the "is Benn nursing an injury?" whenever his play wasn't up to par? You could be totally right. Hell it would even be consistent with Stankoven shooting from further out, as high danger areas require more wrist control and upper body manipulation to pick corners and such (not to mention, how easily he's getting shoved off the puck this year).

But look at Seguin. Dude was playing injured, and was playing the season of his life until he had to shut himself down. There's just no way to say for sure, and I find it an awful look on Dallas if it is true: asking players to play through injury only worsens with time. So while it could be true, his play shouldn't be free from analysis because of something theoretical.

Sort of a tangent, but I seem to recall a not really discussed injury Benn suffered a few years back in which he went for a big hit, caught all glass on his shoulder and sort of shuffled off afterwards. I don't recall if he missed any games. I don't think so, but since that time his physicality disappeared. He stopped trying to hit people, then went through a period (for a couple years) where he tried to hit people with his back (always missing) and now, like the rest of the team, he does the old Modano flyby unless it is open ice and he gets mad enough. Just an observation.

Micah's model thinks Stankoven is doing fine on everything but finishing. In fact it likes his 5v5 isolated offensive impact quite a bit more than last year's. A wise person once said, "No sport misleads more by a player’s production than hockey." He's third on the team in shots! Both guys in front of him (Robo and Wyatt) get a lot more ice time.

OK, "but finishing" is kind of a big deal, I think it's fine to want more out of him. But if Seguin were here, and DeBoer scratched him in favor of Back or Blackwell, it would be criminal malpractice.

My thoughts exactly re: finishing. Didn’t PDB move him up to the Robertson-Hintz line at the very end of the San Jose game and Johnston to the 4th line with Back-Blackwell, and Johnston was the one who got a goal out of it?? Tough sledding for Stank. But if he snaps out of it and heats up in the playoffs, all will be forgiven 😉

I think you're 100% correct on the line shuffle and results!

With Granlund he went from the hold plugger to just another guy. Sad but again he’s young. Kind of wish he got AHL time like bichsel but the phantom injury piece may be at play there.

Does game score take into account failed clears/turnovers that lead to extended dzone time? Does it take into account getting shoved around and lawn chaired? I like him, but strangely enough in watching that San Jose game his play viewed (no analytics) like the worst game he'd played yet. He was routinely shoved around and had his play dictated to him by the forecheck. His failed clears/turnovers were down from that LA game, but he still got stuck in the zone a few times. I've noticed DeBoer likes to breed physicality out of his players and you really only see a Stars player being physical if they've been scratched or they're a call up. For Bischel's part (and for this part Oleksiak and Hank as well when they were here) I'm reminded of Tree from Mystery, Alaska. He's already forgotten that he's the big guy.

I don’t want a Jamie O type. Add to the boys game, bury the physical in other depth but don’t remove it. Chara got better with age because he added pieces, but you always knew he was the biggest guy on the ice.
