We fans, and reporters, do need to still talk about the Stone scheme. It’s been 3 years in a row that he has been put on LTIR and his salary used for high end reinforcement . 3 years.

In any league that has a minimum of integrity, this needs to be investigated thoroughly.

You know that Jim Nill could have probably done the same thing with Seguin this year. Most probably, the only thing that kept him doing it is integrity.

I agree. But a discussion like that needs to be a good faith discussion. Stick a bunch of assumptions from opposing groups into a paper bag and letting them rip isn't what I'd call 'good faith.' This is not directed at you. I'm just saying for my part, I want to have that discussion, but it's not very productive if I just throw my own judgment flippantly into a game recap. Apparently the LTIR doctor was interviewed the other day but I haven't been able to track it down.

Starting the 4th line was a strategic error for sure and Dadanov was a big part of that.

I'm frustrated but calm (is that possible?). Frustrated to see the Stars peter away game one but I also appreciate that many of our best players underperformed most of the game and looked wholly under prepared. PDB has to make some kind of adjustment to Vegas. Bombing shots from the blue line doesn't work against this team and they were flat out out-gritted in the crease.

I'm anxiously looking forward to a bounce back tonight even though the game may not end until tomorrow (thanks NHL).

Otter's game was very hard to judge for me because he seemed to be in position and making decent reads most of the night to my layman eyes. Vegas had an open guy deep in the crease every time I blinked.

My only gripe with Otter was the second goal.

David I usually pretty much agree with you but I just can’t agree on Joe Pavelski. I don’t think Joe had as much of a down year as it looks like. Let me put it this way. Robo and Hintz scored 15 less goals than last year. I am saying that If they scored like last year Joe would have had assists on let’s say half of those goals. That puts him over 70 points. That probably puts him inthe top 20% of points producers in the NHL. JMO

I think the Pavelski discussion is instructive for this reason: production vs. performance. Pavelski was productive, intensely so. But how many of those points were created from repeatable plays? How many of those points were created from strong possession, prowess on the rush, or strength on the forecheck? Etc. Players like Pavelski are obviously still valuable. You can make a reasonable argument that players who can finish are more valuable than players who drive play. But in the context of the top line operating as an elite group, it's reasonable to highlight which players are lacking, shift to shift. Like in boxing. Pavelski still has the power. But he's no longer winning rounds. IMO

Is Blume a legitimate NHL prospect?

Expand full comment

No. Insofar as he has NHL skills, yes, but he's a dude that can give you Janmark or Devin Shore level shifts, and not much else. He's got straight lane speed, and a decent shot, but everything else about his game is missing. It's telling that even next to Bourque and Stankoven, he slowed down eventually.

Did I hear in that highlight reel that he’d scored 30+ goals?

Yep. 31, which led the team. He can definitely shoot. I'm probably lower on Blumel than most though.

He’s pretty exciting but I agree with you David that he’s pretty limited but the tools he has and the numbers he puts up screams (to me at least) that he’s a great sell high option when needing to add to a trade package. Maybe someone bites on his counting stats being enough, like a low rent Dach.
