With no disrespect intended, Harley is a 1B* dman. I mean this in that he's real good, but I'm not quite sure that I could say he's an unqualified #1D in the league. Similar to Klingberg, he just quite seem to have the magical "IT" that pushes you into that camp. The good news is, Dallas has a 1A dman in Miro who is lights out, but is the mesa which is only impressive when you take in in all its glory vs one particular high point media love to latch onto.
Put Tommy on the 2nd pair, give him the lopsided matchups. Sure it will torpedo Miro's Norris hopes, but makes the Stanley hopes that much clearer.
*All of this could absolutely change because we are talking about a 22 year old who has played 1 1/2 seasons in the NHL. A few years from now and I can see the only thing holding him back from an unqualified #1 tag being Miro. Could this be the next Webber Josi duo?
No guts no glory :)))). Agreed he’s a risk, and will need teammates to feed him the puck. But he will be covered more closely because of that shot, which should result in opening up space for his line mates. He should be able to play better dzone with his reach… at least as good as Hull or Radulov with risk/reward being his cannon!
It wasn't meant as a slight. I just mean they would be players leveraged to make the cap work, but they wouldn't the value Columbus would actively seek in order to make a deal work. That would be a young roster player, or picks -- something with "liquid" value rather than static value.
I'd keep an eye on Calgary & San Jose on the Harley offsheet front.
I first thought San Jose might want revenge on Dallas for taking Joe away, all the cap space in the world and no good reason not too piss them off, but then I checked Calgary's Puckpedia page.... Loaded right side now and for the foreseeable future with Brzustewicz on the way, even more cap space than the Sharks some how, and no future top pair LD anywhere in the org.
A 1st, 2nd, & 3rd isn't much of a price for a young top pair defenseman.
All that to say, I think Harley inks his new deal around the time they launch Dallas' new content machine, Victory+.
I don't see how Laine fits stylistically. He's what Ovechkin used to be accused of being (passenger with a lethal shot). I think for him to succeed he needs to spend his time with teammates that can transition for him *and* get him the puck in a shooting position, and as you've mentioned many times Dallas is not a great passing team.
He's an interesting player, because when he's on, he's on, and I think what teams really need to succeed in the playoffs is high risk/high reward types, but in Laine's specific case, I think he'd be too difficult to accommodate on this particular Stars team.
Laine on that 2016 Ruff team is where we start cooking. I get the allure though. It's hard to score goals, so having someone who can do that consistently is its own asset. I'm still totally confused by the EV/PP splits.
PL is very interesting bc CBJ will probably have to eat some value to move even half the contract. I’d think Marchment and a lesser prospect or pick could get it done with CBJ retaining… not so sure it makes the Stars better but goal scoring is still the hardest thing to get in the sport.
I'd make the deal if it was Marchment for Laine with negligible cap hit difference. Both of them are kind of specialty players. Zero chance that CBJ makes this deal because they could do better from some other team.
One of those times where the rest of the meal is so good, you don't really even need to think about the dessert options, especially at these prices.

You could always self publish your novel on Amazon. It's about a hockey league full of animorphs I presume?
Who gave you my manuscript?!?

What do you mean by the statement Marchment and Dadonov are not assets?

He would have been such a weapon with Spezza or Klingberg feeding him the puck!
Really loved the article ….especially the last paragraph 👍
Thanks Denis!
