The answer for your question is, yes, there is an upgrade. However, in order to activate it - they’d probably need to sit one of Suter (won’t happen) or Hakanpää (won’t happen either).
If they acquire anybody on D, I bet it’s Lundkvist who sits and then we’re back to square one with him.
I don't see a viable D upgrade on the trade market that I'd be willing to pay for. I'd like to see something crazy that won't happen because it's a risk, but trade one or two of Craig Smith, Sam Steel, Ty Dellandrea, or Radek Faksa for picks (5th round seems good for Nill) and clear a path to pull up our Black Aces.
I hate to say it but Pavs looks his age lately. He looks slower than I ever recall, and he is consistently behind the play. I know we will need his PP tips come playoff time, when he’s proven to be Mr Clutch. But what to do with him meanwhile when the game is speeding by him??? The 3rd line is not even close to clicking. That’s the spot that a scoring winger could be brought in and improve the team… but it’d be a cold blooded move with Joe :(((.
As strictly a depth pick up, Nick Seeler looks like the best guy on the market to me. Not going to fix anything, but could be a surprisingly useful depth guy akin to what Hanley brings every postseason with a bit more size.
Even though there's been a fair amount of chatter about him, I wouldn't expect the trade to be more than a 3rd or 4th, maybe a 2nd if Philly retains 50% to make his cap hit almost negligible.
If I'm looking to fix the backend, I'm going with Sean Shapiro and going after Sean Walker. I think he fills out the second pair and works brilliantly with either Harley or Lindell. He's got enough shutdown to his game to cover Harley & enough offense in his game to make a Lindell pairing work while eating heavy minutes.
My only comment about the D men are that I haven’t seen any games outside of the Stars so I have to take y’all’s word on what’s available.
But I still say the Stars are the very worst in the league at getting the puck out of their zone under pressure. It just amazes me how many times they will turn the wrong way and give the puck right back or pass it straight to the other team. Last night was a prime example. Otter stole that game. Buffalo should have ran them out of the building.

Also, if Konecny is available...

...isn't drafting over rated?
