With a fairly minimal RD trade market, does Dumbas contract @ 50% garner interest from Eastern teams looking to bolster depth for a potential playoff push?
1.875m would be worthwhile workable number for a depth peice, and retention on a trade in the offseason or next deadline could recoup any assets lost in aquiring Matt.
Snag a prospect we like for down the road or add some special sauce to Texas for their playoff run, since we'll likely be graduating Bichsel in the process.
Why would any potential PO team would want Dumba if we, a PO team, think he is a liability? And such a liability that we dont even want him as a depth piece?
The only way to get rid of him is by unloading him to a bottom team with assets. Just like David wrote.
I'm not looking too get rid of him, I'm exploring trade avenues.
Considering our old depth is currently keeping some playoff teams afloat, Colorado from the goalie out & NJ has Dowling at 3C, while Noesen revamped his career with a quick training camp PTO a few seasons back. Oh yeah! Brendan Dillion in NJ, too.
Our depth has value, likely at a higher rate than ever with the log jam out East, and the price gouging fest that will occur at the bottom of the West.
It's replaceable depth for Dallas. It's an active upgrade at a reasonable price for teams willing to add for their WC race.
Tampa just paid a 7th last season to take him on at full 3.9m cost. His numbers are actively better, if only slightly, and he's began settling into a support role vs over reaching to be a top 4 defender.
There is obviously value too still be extracted from the contract, and we can actively raise the value with retention, without jeopardizing future cap space.
For my money, the best move (defense-wise) Nill could make is try to get a guy like Brandon Carlo from Boston and *try* to involve Dumba going the other way, to make money work. That way you can still add an impactful player like J.T. Miller using LTIR pool.
DAL gets: Brandon Carlo, 2026 2nd, 2025 3rd
BOS get: Matt Dumba
Since BOS is a in a weird retool mode, they might take it.
And use Lundkvist + + in a J.T. Miller trade along with picks and top prospect (Hemming?).
Boston would take your number and throw it down the toilet. That`s a massive and gigantic overpay for Dumba.
Vancouver will ask for Stankoven + Bichsel + Draft picks for Miller. Something in the line that what they asked from the Rangers (Lafreniere + Schneider). Also, and important to note, Miller as a full NMC, and did not ask to be traded.
No Vancouver does not want to move Miller, but if the sideshow gets to a point that they feel he needs to go in order to save a wild card berth and for some reason he's only willing to go to Dallas, JT Miller holds all the cards with his full no trade after all, I don't see Gagliardi doing a damn thing too help Vancouver.
Miller is a media driven thing & Duchene was due to a new GM thing, either way both moves will be driven by differences in hockey philosophy needing to be addressed. Trotz didn't like the isolation game Dutch plays and couldn't find a trade partner for a big budget deal with trade protection.
God only knows what real, if any, consternation exist between Petterson & Miller, but the Vancouver media sure is having a feild day with this 'situation'.
I say bring Miller on. Benn and Duchene are strong enough to control Miller in the room. I don’t think Duchene gets enough credit for his leadership. If he doesn’t fit in then he is a rental if he fits then the Stars are a better team.
Repeating myself here…..I’m not a fan of ‘rentals’. Especially if they’ve been labeled as a locker room cancer. The Staff and Team Captain have enough on their plate as is, and another distraction is not good.
Pleased the young AHL guys made a major contribution to the game win last night 😆 . Why do we need locker room cancer rental type with bloated salary …… 👎👎 on Miller
As a current player, I get the Miller trade idea… and how he might help… but I’d prefer an $8M/yr investment on a younger guy... even if it costs more in player prospects/draft picks. How many good years does Miller have left? Father Time might say “2 good, 2 ave, and 2 bad yrs”…
This might be biased vs actually true, but it seems that Hintz is often injured, especially in the playoffs, should see what he’d bring in a trade?

No serious team would take a "depth" piece at close to 4M$ of Cap Space for this year and the next. They would not even take Dumba @ 50% retention.
Just because we learned from our Ben Lovejoy experience, doesn't mean other GM's have.
T'is a silly a sport.
You are comparing apples with oranges.
The contract of Lovejoy was in no way comparable to Dumba's.

How bout them apples!

Lindell - Heiskanen
Harley - Carlo
Bichsel - Lyubushkin
I could see Lyubuskin getting that package, but Dumba i think we'd have to add a mid to late pick too smooth out value or possibly retain a touch.
I don't see Lundkvist moving the needle for Vancouver in the slightest. Hughes is the exception, because Vancouver likes big beefy backstops.
If we're looking to get a big swing TDL addition, i think Lyubuskin becomes a pivotal part of the trade package.
It's kind of odd that the weakest position (RD), is actually the deepest pool of NHL TDL assets Dallas has.

If they could get those assets out of NY and not have Miller blow up the deal, it would be done by now.
If Duchene is any lesson, Dallas will patiently wait for Vancouver to throw their hands up in frustration and kick him out the door for cheap.
That is what Vancouver is asking, not what the Rangers wants to pay.
Miller will not get traded for cheap and again you are comparing apples and oranges with the Duchene situation.

At the risk of looking stupid eventualy, I am calling it: Lafreniere + Miller for Miller
If we could unload Dumba, does Ryan Pulock a good target for a trade?
